Why Traditional Bean Bags Have Plastic – And Why Eco-Friendly Is the Way Forward! 🌱
If you've ever relaxed in a cozy bean bag, you might not have thought about what’s inside. Most traditional bean bags are filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS), a type of plastic similar to Styrofoam. While lightweight and comfortable, EPS is made from petroleum-based materials, making it a major environmental concern. These plastic beads are non-biodegradable and can sit in landfills for hundreds or even thousands of years, contributing to long-lasting plastic waste.
A more eco-friendly solution is bean bags filled with natural, plant-based materials like BioFoam®, which is biodegradable and compostable. BioFoam® is made from renewable plant sources, offering the same comfort and support as plastic alternatives, but without the environmental harm. Choosing products like this helps reduce plastic waste, as the filling naturally breaks down over time, and it's often made from recycled materials, free from harmful chemicals.

Useful Tips
Keep Away from Direct Sunlight: To prevent natural bleaching of colors, avoid exposing the fabric to direct sunlight for extended periods.
Restore Shape After Use: After sitting, it’s a good idea to pick up your bean bag and lightly shake it. This helps the filling and fabric return to their original shape and ensures optimal comfort.

Why Plastic-Free Matters
Polystyrene, the material often used to fill traditional beanbags, contains harmful chemicals like styrene and benzene. These substances are linked to serious health risks, including hormonal disruption and damage to the nervous system. But that’s not all—polystyrene can take hundreds of years to break down in landfills, causing long-term harm to our environment.
Most beanbags are filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS), a type of plastic that’s similar to Styrofoam. You’ll find it in things like disposable coffee cups and packaging materials. While it serves a purpose in these products, EPS is not the best choice for the planet. Its chemical risks and environmental impact make it a less sustainable option for your home.

The cotton we choose is hard wearing – it’s been thoroughly tested to make sure that it stands up to life as a bean bag, and our customers appreciate that cotton is a more sustainable choice and less damaging than other man-made alternatives.
12. Does BioFoam® last or do your beanbags need refilling over time?
BioFoam® has many great properties, one of which is durability, so the need for top-ups will be low. However, we know that you’re going to spend a lot of time using your bean bag, so if you do need to top up the filling, we can provide you with a refill tube to use at home.
13. What chemicals are used in the fire retardant barrier interliner?
There are no chemicals used on the outer bag. It is important to us that no chemicals come in contact with the skin.
